A suspenseful, violent horror film that touches on the inner lives of sexual predators, the question of guilt and remorse in the human soul, and the practice of torture.
Tirdad Derakhshani. Unpredictable, with a twisted surprise around each corner, Big Bad Wolves is a clever and arresting shocker.
Rex Reed. There's little to the movie other than shocks and gross-outs. Rene Rodriguez. It is an intriguing film with much to admire, but it doesn't always earn its pitch-black attempts at humor.
Bill Goodykoontz. Tarantino-aping hasn't died out entirely; it's just moved to Israel. Godfrey Cheshire. While Big Bad Wolves delivers the Hostel-like torture jolts with ruthless precision, the movie is also a rudely funny satire of a macho, paranoid culture where the protection of children is used to justify any conduct.
Liam Lacey. Unfortunately, ambition, ambiguity and scale prevent Big Bad Wolves from complete success. David Harris.
Nikki Baughan. Extremely sophisticated in its visuals and in its narrative Andrew Pollard. Big Bad Wolves is certainly a film that gets its point across in a very satisfying way.
Chris Ward. Big Bad Wolves tries to raise questions about the use of torture and vengeance, but these are questions that have been explored before in far better films.
Keshales and Papushado expertly manipulate the moving dynamics of the situation to create an atmosphere in which audience allegiance shifts from scene to scene.

The girl's father, Gidi, himself a retired military man, also suspects Dror of his involvement and plans to kidnap him.
Dror is first kidnapped by Micki but later both of them are kidnapped by Gidi and taken to an abandoned house in the middle of an area surrounded by Arab villages.
Here, both Micki and Gidi take turns torturing Dror, until he convinces Micki that he might after all be innocent. Gidi, a hardened veteran, doesn't fall for the trick and manages to disarm and shackle Micki in his basement.
Upon hearing the fabricated story that he might be ill, Gidi's father comes to visit him with some hot soup and accidentally encounters the two captives in the basement.
Gidi's father, an Army veteran, decides to help his son in tracing his granddaughter's missing head. Micki—who has in his possession a rusty nail—asks Dror to lie about the location of the girl's head to buy them some time to escape.
Gidi then leaves the house to locate his daughter's missing head and Micki also escapes and goes out to look for help.
He makes a phone call to the police department, where he learns that his daughter is missing. It then strikes him that Dror referred to his daughter in a conversation while he had no way of knowing that Micki had a daughter.
Gidi searches the described location for his daughter's head but upon not finding anything comes back and starts cutting off Dror's head with a hacksaw.
Micki also reaches the house and tries to ask Dror for the location of his daughter but Dror dies before he can reply.
In the final scene, police officer Rami, who is investigating the case, is shown inspecting Dror's house for any clues. He does not find anything and leaves the house.
Micki's daughter is shown unconscious behind a fake wall. The film was released in Israel on 15 August and opened in other theatres at the dates given below.

For that young teacher, Dror Rotem Keinan , the abuse is close to unrelenting. Early on, he's picked up and beaten mercilessly by three cops.
When a video surreptitiously made of that assault goes viral, it seems like he may get a reprieve. But no. After another headless child is found, rogue cop Micki Lior Ashkenazi goes after Dror again, but his assault is interrupted by the little girl's father, Gidi Tzahi Grad , who imprisons both the detective and the teacher in the basement of his remote country home since his motives are different than those of the police: Rather than wanting to solve the crimes, he simply intends to torture the young man into revealing the location of his daughter's head, then kill him.
Although the hour or so of torture that follows features some adroit plot twists, "Big Bad Wolves" is one of those movies in which certain storytelling lapses are bound to frustrate more logical-minded viewers.
Unless I missed something, we're never told why the police came to suspect Dror in the first place, and his tormentors don't mention any evidence in their unavailing efforts to force a confession from him.
If, as we're told, the murderer sexually violated every orifice of his victims, wouldn't DNA evidence provide irrefutable proof of Dror's guilt or innocence?
Have the Israeli police never heard of forensics? And then there's the wasted potential of the tale's political possibilities.
In the film's press notes its directors, Navot Papushado and Aharon Kashales, say that it "draws inspiration from the society in which we live.
Existential anxiety serves as Israel's foundation and attempts to define and reinforce the legitimacy of the state: a fear of terrorist activities, primarily kidnappings, unremitting feelings of being persecuted, inherent intolerance and macho behavior topped with a historical craving for vengeance create an ideal breeding ground for extreme actions and subsequent reactions.
That's a lucid and provocative statement, and there's a special, undeniable fascination in this story of ferocious, unapologetic torture taking place in Israel.
If you imagine the same film with a Palestinian in the torture chair, it would be a movie with an explosive and unavoidable political message.
But the one Palestinian in this story is a gentle farmer who's here for purposes of irony and humor, not provocation. A film like last year's " Prisoners " shows that a similar premise can be played for powerful, thought-provoking drama.
The makers of "Big Bad Wolves" may want to claim a serious social critique for their film, but they have elected to bury it so deeply within thriller genre conventions that most viewers won't bother to dig for it.
Of course, there's a worldwide market for Tarantino-style seriocomic violent brutality, and Papushado and Keshales can be credited with giving the Israeli cinema a kind of genre filmmaking that it has seldom produced.
That's an achievement of sorts, surely, but it's a far lesser one than a more artistically ambitious film could have provided.

It's like Tarantino with a heart. Julie B Super Reviewer. Jul 15, Disappointingly average revenge thriller with added black comedy.
I didn't once believe in any of the situations, the characters reactions, or the writing. Stylish directing aside, it was a bit dull in my opinion though I seem to be in the minority.
Daniel P Super Reviewer. May 27, I have to give this film points for doing so much with very little. Perhaps that's the wrong description, I just find that the film has a confidence about it and a restraint that really makes it much better than most films of this ilk.
There's no hurry to get to the torture and violence. Because of that, some may not enjoy the film as much as they should, that pacing can definitely test someone's patience.
I think the film counterbalances this deliberate pacing with a pitch black sense of humor, which helps make what would've been a very dark and disturbing film easier to swallow.
For example, seeing Gidin, the man who orchestrated the kidnapping and torture of his daughter's suspected murderer, arguing with his overprotective mother about her wanting to come take care of him because he is sick is very funny.
Particularly considering how Gidin is portrayed as this cold, maniacal man. That definitely makes the film easier to watch.
And that's not the only example of the film's comedic prowess, it's just one of the more memorable ones. The film is beautifully shot, this was a film clearly shot by people who know what they're doing and who have a sense of how to build tension and anticipation to the horrible events that are about to happen.
Beautiful cinematography to boot. Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado are filmmakers to look out for in the future.
It'll be interesting to see if they can transition from something to something more experimental, because there are art-house influences in the way the film is shot and how it is presented.
The film score is also top-notch to boot. Now that I think about it, there's very little about the film that I didn't like, so I should upgrade the score from 3.
Does it really matter in the long run? I doubt it, but this film really was quite the top-notch thriller with an excellent sense of humor.
It's certainly more of an acquired taste, particularly if you want a quicker pace, but this is certainly a very rewarding and intelligent thriller that entertains you, but also makes you think.
